With Wednesday’s action in the books, all 2018 Pro Masters Disc Golf World Championships competitors have now had a chance to play both of the courses in their preliminary rounds schedule. Thursday and Friday provide the opportunity to take what they’ve learned over the two days prior and try to improve. For the top players in the largest division, Masters 40+, any mistakes made are going to be costly, as the players at the top of the leaderboard are all capable of putting up incredible scores.
Wednesday saw the Masters 40+ and the Masters 50+ competitors taking on the constantly demanding, steep uphills and downhills of the one and only Waterworks Park. Coming into the round, there were 11 players within five strokes of then-leader Justin Mcluen. Now, with the Waterworks round complete, the scores have started to spread out. Only six men are within five of the first place, a lead currently shared by JohnE McCray, David Feldberg, and Brian Schweberger.
After a smoking hot start of 6-under par through the first eight holes, California’s Shasta Criss earned the last spot on the lead card sitting just one throw behind and tied with Delaware’s Mike Moser, who will share the chase card with defending Masters World Champion Barry Schultz, Chris Sprague, and Larry Gardner.
Patrick Brown opened up the lead ever so slightly in the Masters 50+ division, pulling away from 2017 Masters 50+ World Champion Ron Convers. Coming from Oklahoma, one might expect Convers to have a bit of an advantage here in Kansas City as someone who knows how to play well in the wind. While that might be true, there hasn’t been much wind to put that theory to the test. Brown now leads by three going into round three back at Bad Rock Creek with the Masters 40+ competitors.

The rest of the divisions spent their second day at the gorgeous Heritage Park on the other side of town, doing their best to keep their discs on the pristine grass fairways. Disc Golf Hall of Fame member David Greenwell, the only competitor who has never missed a world championship since the inaugural event in 1982, sits at the top of the leaderboard in the Masters 60+ division after turning in a 5-under par 57 at Heritage. Greenwell is looking to snag what would be his 10th world title as a professional.
It will be anything but easy for Greenwell, as another Disc Golf Hall of Fame member, Dr. Rick Voakes -- who also shot a 57 on Wednesday at Heritage -- sits just one stroke behind, tied with Japan’s Kazuo Shirai. Randy Beers will take the last position on the lead card after tossing the hot round of 55 at Heritage, sharing fourth place with Kenny Lee just two off the lead.
