New Criteria Announced in POY/ROY Standings

Thursday, February 18, 2021 - 16:47

With the evolution of the professional tour, the PDGA is adjusting its POY and ROY formula for the 2021 season and beyond, adding an emphasis on Majors and Elite Series events.

The current points system was designed in 2007 and with a dramatic evolution of the professional scene since then, a change was warranted.

“Fifteen years ago, the professional tour was not what it is today, so the POY standings relied heavily on A and B Tier tournaments to calculate the best players that year,” PDGA Events Coordinator Todd Lion said. “In the past few years, though, the National Tour and Disc Golf Pro Tour have coalesced into a true elite series of events, which are attended by all of the best players.

“With the Elite Series being the de facto proving ground for all the top players, we think it's appropriate to increase the emphasis on Majors and Elite events and decrease the emphasis on A and B Tiers.”

In the new formula for calculating winners, top 10 finishes in Majors and Elite Series events, including the Disc Golf Pro Tour, will be weighted higher. Top three finishes at A Tier events are still included in the formula, and B Tiers will be removed from the criteria entirely.
