Course Reviews

This is a very inviting course for all skill levels. Most of the holes are open, featuring gradual elevation changes and easily avoided trees. These holes afford novice and intermediate players the opportunity to practice basic skills with minimal frustration. Advanced players will likely shoot 2's and 3's on these holes.

The wooded holes present more of a challenge. While some will clearly present an optimal path, others can be approached in a variety of ways. These holes are great for practicing new approach techniques to diversify your shot selection.

This is a great practice course, but over time it will leave players itching to try different, more challenging courses. This may change over the next few years; there are many young trees that have been strategically located to make the course more challenging in the future.

I've been playing for a while, and this is a solid course for players of any skill level. Amateurs will find it welcoming and forgiving. Advanced/professional players will still find challenging holes along the course, but should score below pro par. It's a fun course, whether you throw in the 40's or the 80's.

About two thirds of the course is open, with some gradual elevation changes and a number of young trees planted as obstacles (this course is going to get a lot more interesting with time). The other third is wooded and requires more precise throwing, along with a variety of different throws. I'd say that this course is a very good balance of open, wooded, short, long, and dog legged.

The tee boxes are smaller than some I've seen, but are similar to those on most courses and give you plenty of room to pull long drives. If you use a big run-up, odds are you're used to starting off of the tee box anyway. The baskets and signage are kept in good repair. There is plenty of parking. And the park is beautiful, which is more than I can say for many of the courses in central Indiana.

Let's start with the good. This is a nice clean park, but the DGC has room for improvement. Let me emphasize the cleanliness because it's this golf course's best feature. On the day I played here, the only people using the park seemed to be disc golfers, and there were quite a few of them.

There are new cement tee pads on every hole, but you'll find that they are just a little but shorter than they should be which makes getting a good run up on your drive a little awkward. I found I was losing distance on my drives because of it.

The course itself is uninspiring. The front nine are all pretty much wide open shots the play slightly up or down hill. Pick your line and let rip, there's nothing stopping you no matter where you throw. The distance varies, but that's about it.

The back nine is the flip side of the same coin. There are about 5 or 6 wooded holes here. You'll be throwing through a high canopy forest and the only line line to be found on any of these holes is in your imagination. I suspect the even pros would have difficulty finding their way cleanly through the numerous trees placed seemingly at random. Some selective forestry could make this part of the course very enjoyable.

I would to have loved to give this course a higher rating, but the hole selection just isn't there. There are really only two types of holes on the course, holes that are far too open and holes that are far too wooded.

Course was recently enhanced with all new hole signs; Two baskets re-set; basket numbers re-aligned facing tees; Hole #12 was lengthen 20 ft;
Course play since July 2009 revision of layout is much more balanced - mix of short and long; five wooded holes continue to be the challenging part of course; There is little potential conflict with walkers - only on holes #7, #8, and #9; For the beginner, the course provides full experience of long straight holes, left and right doglegs; tunnel shots; use of rollers and tomahawks; Pros may be frustrated with short tee pads - one needs to adjust approach;
Park is kept in great condition, great place for family with playgrounds, shelters - only major negative is lack of bathrooms unless utilizing shelters; You can always hit restroom in Town Hall when they are open during the week
