This is my home course so I am a bit biased. Played my first round here in ~1989, and at least 500 times since.

It's an excellent starter course with a lot of history and character, set in a grassy wooded area that is easy to navigate. The short layout on flat ground stresses the basics of midrange and putting shots. Most holes are in the 200-300' range, with a choice of two or 3 tee-pads per hole. If you are starting out in the sport, or introducing a child to the game, this is definitely the place to go locally.

Bigger arms might be frustrated by the score compression associated with the tight layout, as the course strongly favors midrange precision, and the best technical player should win every time. There are really only a couple holes on the course where arm strength will help pick up a stroke over an excellent circle 1 putter.

The course does have some drainage issues so first timers would be best to avoid it after a heavy rain or in the soggy months. Otherwise come out to Calvert!

I agree that it's really difficult to know where the basket is on each hole. Luckily, when I went other golfers pointed out to me where the baskets were. But that won't help you if you there isn't anybody there to help you out.

I don't know how the park would be in the summer, but I'm guessing swampy. There were a lot of dried up little creeks all around and I think that it would get pretty annoying if they were all full of water. In the winter, no complaints!

It is what it is. For a short course, this course has a wide variety of shots. Great course for beginners or to work on your short game. Also great for playing during the hottest summer days and in the winter!

Obviously it isn't long and there is a reason it has the nickname "The Swamp". But you can't find a better course to start a beginner at. Also once you have played the course a couple times the layout is easy to follow. Probably it would be nice to have maps.

I've played here for many years as this was one of the first places i learned to play, and i still enjoy playing and running events here!

Keep an eye out for the Hawks that nest here, very cool!

Pro's: Is a good place to work on your short game (if you can focus on your game and not looking over your shoulder).

Con's: Spent a lot time trying to find the right basket, reteeing to shot at the correct basket and waiting for the fair way to clear from a near by hole so you don't hit someone.

It would be helpful to have a course map, work on the tee signs, and mark the baskets better.

Like I always say a bad day at the disc golf course is better than a good day at work.

I really didn't care for this course. All of the holes are stuffed into a tiny, flat park. It's a challenge to figure out what basket you're even throwing at. Don't even bring a distance driver. It floods after heavy rains; there were giant puddles everywhere. Nothing original or unique about it. Just a place to go if you're bored and want to birdie a bunch of holes.

Pros:
-Free

Cons:
-Plain and boring
-Short holes
-Takes 10 minutes to figure out what basket you're throwing at.

I like how all the holes are arranged in one shaded area so you don't have to walk too far and get lost with plenty of challenges of throwing around tree stumps and sort and the multiple tees gives you the variety as well.

Very nice course. I played my first round in over 15 years, today, and I wonder why I ever let it go... (+2, not terrible). Calvert was shorter than what I used to play on the West coast, but fairly well groomed and marked.
I followed another group, as I was alone and unfamiliar with the layout, but I'm very confident that I'll be able to navigate the whole course unaided next time. By the way, the only 2 pieces of litter to be seen were picked up and deposited in barrells by the guys I was following--- a great surprise/example. Let's all be this responsible!
There is a message board by the parking area with info. on other course locations, local pro contacts, the closest place to buy discs, and even a "found a pair of eyeglasses" message. All that was missing was a course layout, but it really doesn't require a degree to get around this one.
I rated it a 4 because it's fun and challenging for beginners and experts... can someone teach me to throw left-handed?

I gave this course a 3 but I would also lean on giving it a 3.5-4 star rating for what it is. It may not be the best of the best courses but for the small area and the "box" like field that it is, the design still makes it very playable. This 18 hole course is very close to the University of Maryland and is one of the oldest disc golf courses in the county!

Pros:

If I could describe this course in one word it would be "Technical". This course really makes you go back to the basics with your drives and puts. I like it because I enjoy going back to this course to practice placement on my drives and approaches. Some Pro's that I have talked to hate this course and don’t wont to consider it a course. This is a great course to both practice and learn on. I have taken several people (including my GF) to this course to learn about what disc golf is and they really enjoyed it. About a Half a mile down the road the Aviation Museum sells a variety of disc brands for a reasonable price.

Cons:

The cons are exactly what a lot of Pros hate about it. It’s small and very cramped. If you shank a drive, be ready to call "Fore" very fast as it is guaranteed you will land in another fairway. There is almost no elevation change. Imagine a big box like field with a lot of trees and tees around it, that’s Calvert! There was recently a PDGA tournament held there with 70 ppl. I couldn’t imagine this course with 70 ppl at one time playing Disc. You would be waiting forever to throw on the next hole!

Conclusion:

Good location as there really isn’t any other courses around the area. I do enjoy going back to Calvert time to time to practice my technical skills and for any disc golfer just starting out this is the best course around for you to start playing.
