Moving Day at the BSF

Moving Day at the BSF

Sunday, June 17, 2012 - 00:17

Saturday was moving day at the Beaver State Fling, presented by Keen Footwear, in Estacada, Oregon and there certainly was a fair amount of movement by many of the world’s top professional disc golfers in an attempt to put them in position for a run at the title in Sunday’s final round.

The day started very early with an 8:00 am start for the 141 amateurs making up the SuperTour side of the event, which began today. Once they had completed their rounds and cleared the course, the Pro National Tour Elite Series, presented by Vibram Disc Golf, teed off for round 3 with the Open Men on the West Course and the Open Women and age based divisions on the East Course under the most beautiful of conditions at Milo McIver Park.

Nate Doss continued his impressive consistent play with a -9 on the par 61 layout to give him a three throw lead in the Open division at -27 for the tournament. Doss looked nearly untouchable all day until a lapse in concentration at the end of the round when he missed two very makeable birdie putts on holes 17 and 18.  Despite those short misses, he still managed to card the second best round of the day and enter tomorrow’s final round as the man to catch. Tim Skellenger and Will Schusterick, who both entered the day tied with Doss for the lead, each carded a very respectable -6 to trail by 3 throws in second place with a -24 three round total. Cale Leiviska turned in the low round of the day with a blistering 1071 rated, -10 to move into the lead group for the final round at -23 for the tournament. Look for Leiviska, Schusterick and Skellenger to push Doss on Sunday as a three round lead going to the East Course on Sunday is not enough for Doss to take it easy.

In the Open Women’s division, Catrina Allen remains in the lead at but lost a little ground with her +3 on the day to drop her back to +3 for the tournament. Valarie Jenkins and Paige Pierce both carded very strong Even par rounds to stay at +6 for the event and tied for second place, three throws behind Allen. Sarah Hokom carded a +4 on the day to put her at +9 for the event, good enough for the final spot on the lead card going into the final round on the West Course on Sunday.

Phil Arthur equaled the low round of the day in the Masters division when he turned in a 1022 rated, -4 to move to -9 for the event and extend his lead just slightly. Jim Hagen shot a -3 on Saturday to sit alone in second place with a -6 total and three throws off the lead. Patrick Brown shot a -2 and sits alone in third at -5 and Tom Embree matched Phil Arthur’s -4 on Saturday to move onto the lead card for the finals with a -4 total.

Jim Oates maintained his lead in the Grandmasters division with his Even par round leaving him at -7 for the tournament and in control with a three throw lead with 18 holes left to play. Jeff Fiedler made the biggest move with his third round -4 to jump into second place with Rick Bailey just one throw back at -3. Doug Werner rounds out the lead card at -1.

Bruce Sisson carded the low round of the tournament in the Senior Grandmaster division with a very respectable +6 to vault into a five throw lead over former leader, Tom Bontempo with one round left to play for the title. Five throws may sound significant but anything can happen at Milo McIver so Sisson will have to be on his game tomorrow if he is to hoist the trophy.
