PDGA is Bringing Back the Fight Against Cancer

Tuesday, October 1, 2024 - 19:30

In 2013, the PDGA started an initiative to increase women’s participation in disc golf events while also raising money for an incredibly important cause, the fight against cancer. Each year during the month of October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month), the PDGA would donate $2 for every female that competes in a PDGA-sanctioned event to charity. This initiative last happened around 2017

We are bringing the fight back in 2024. During October, for any competitor playing in a female-based division, the PDGA will donate $2 for each C-tier and above tournament (worldwide) they play to Throw Pink. Throw Pink is a non-profit organization that encourages women and girls to get out and be physically active through disc golf. Throw Pink was established to raise money for women's health-related charities through fun disc golf initiatives. The program has raised over $200,000 for women's cancer initiatives, specifically breast cancer.

Throw Pink is excited to receive support from the PDGA on this initiative. Throw Pink was inspired by The Magnolia Open, the women's only event at the IDGC that has been taking place since 2009, so this feels like a full-circle moment for me.

At Throw Pink, we run events to get more women and girls active through disc golf while raising funds for women's health initiatives in communities nationwide.

Our events provide a safe and welcoming space for women and girls to come together and enjoy disc golf while raising funds to make a difference in the fight to end cancer. Fun with a purpose!

Previous Donations

From 2013 through 2015 the PDGA selected the Young Survival Coalition (YSC) for the October initiative charity. The YSC is the premier global organization dedicated to the critical issues unique to young women diagnosed with breast cancer. YSC offers resources, connections, and outreach, so these women feel supported, empowered and hopeful.

  • In 2013, there were 625 female participants in PDGA sanctioned events during the month of October that raised a total of $1250 from the PDGA. Prodigy stepped up and matched this donation through the sale of special edition pink discs, bringing the total donated to $2500.
  • In 2014, there were 682 female participants totaling $1,364 raised in player fees plus a $612 donated from the United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship’s raffle and silent auction set up by Tournament Directors, Mom and Old Man Wallis.
  • In 2015 with the increase in female participation in disc golf events (866 in the month of October) the player fees donation to YSC increased to $1,732.
  • In 2017 there were 1,341 players in female divisions at C-Tiers and above. The total aggregate donation prior was more than $11,780 to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
