2022 PDGA Elite Series

2022 PDGA Elite Series

It was an incredible day at Pickard Park, capped off by a nighttime, outdoor show by Grammy-nominated musician Cory Wong.

The work started before sunrise. Equipment, tents and signs needed replacing and repositioning by staff members. Cameras required new batteries and a final check by their Disc Golf Network operators. Volunteers took long walks to their stations.

It was a long day for the players. It was longer for the people that make a DGPT event happen.

A beautiful day in Iowa gave way to thunderstorms late in the day, but not before the entire FPO field and 28 competitors in the MPO field completed their opening rounds at the DGPT - TruBank Des Moines Challenge presented by Discraft. MPO players – including seven cards that didn’t begin first round play – will resume play at 7:00 a.m. local time on Saturday.

Twenty-five years ago, Scott Stokely and Juliana Korver took down the Des Moines Challenge.

Both players are in the field this weekend at the DGPT - TruBank Des Moines Challenge presented by Discraft.

A few years later in Iowa, Birgitta Lagerholm took down the 2004 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships, becoming the first player born outside of North America to become a PDGA World Champion.

In more recent history, Missy Gannon won her first Elite Series title a year ago as the DGPT returned to Des Moines and Pickard Park.

When it mattered most, Missy Gannon and Ricky Wysocki delivered.

After three rounds of tight competition with a number of players in contention, Gannon and Wysocki simply delivered championship performances in Sunday’s finale at the DGPT – Discraft Ledgestone Open presented by Bushnell.

Gannon, who has competed in Peoria, Illinois since the beginning of her career, entered Sunday tied with Paige Pierce. Wysocki, the two-time defending champion at Ledgestone, had one one-stroke lead and a handful of players firmly in the mix.

There weren’t too many moves at the top on moving day as the leaders set themselves up for a furious finish in Illinois.

Paige Pierce and Missy Gannon are knotted up in FPO and it’s a five-player race in MPO heading into Championship Sunday at the Disc Golf Pro Tour – Discraft Ledgestone Open presented by Bushnell.
