The 2014 United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship has officially come to an end and we can’t express in words how delighted we were to have been the gracious hosts of the event here at the International Disc Golf Center, as 99 women from 41 states made the journey to the IDGC to compete. After several weeks of intense preparation, we’re very proud to say that the event went off without a hitch. As an added bonus, we were blessed with the presence of Mom and Old Man Wallis all weekend, both of which came down to the IDGC all the way from Peoria, IL to run their eighth successful USWDGC.

Two rounds at the International Disc Golf Center is a long day, always. It doesn’t matter what course(s) or which layouts you choose. At the 2014 United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship today, both the “Steady” Ed Memorial DGC and the Jim Warner Memorial DGC were played by the 11-division field. Both courses feature elevation changes, water hazards, doglegs, blind tee shots, and a seemingly infinite amount of trees lining the fairways and the greens. Exhausting…sure. Luckily, the beauty and complexity they provide to the competitors makes it easy for them to forget just how tired they might be.

The 2014 United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship kicked off today with a single round at the International Disc Golf Center (IDGC). Volunteer legends Mom and Old Man Wallis are running the event with help from the PDGA staff and things went off without a hitch. Mom and Old Man successfully ran the USWDGC for seven years…in a row. They probably don’t need our help, but we offer it anyway out of respect.

It’s hard to believe that it’s already the latter half of September. The National Tour is done for the year, both the Amateur and Professional World Championships have come and gone, and with each passing day there is less and less sunlight available for us all to be outside throwing discs. But don’t let that get you down. There’s still plenty of exciting disc golf coming up this year, with one of the most anticipated events starting in less than 48 hours!

Registration is officially open for the 2014 United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship! This year the tournament will be held at the International Disc Golf Center in Appling, GA and it’s once again expected to be the biggest turnout the event has ever seen. Regardless of age, gender, or skill level, the three courses at the IDGC that the women will be taking on between September 19th and September 21st can only be described as world class and intensely difficult.

Wow. What a weekend. 1100+ disc golfing women of the world united for the same cause, the same tournament, the same day (or two) of fun. Days later, after receiving the results from a large majority of the tournaments involved, we are happy to unofficially announce the overall winner of the 2014 PDGA Women’s Global Event (WGE). Two days of heated battle ensued between Catrina Allen #44184 and Valerie Jenkins #17495, both of which happened to be playing at the Daisy Chains Women’s Tournament in Watsonville, CA.

Two years ago, the PDGA created and hosted one of the most important new events for the sport of disc golf, the Women’s Global Event. It took months and months of planning, but when it was all said and done it was deemed a huge success. 636 women from 24 states in the USA joined forces with women in Norway, Finland, and Australia to compete in what we now consider one of our most cherished events.

In honor of the upcoming 2014 PDGA Women’s Global Event (WGE), we wanted to cover what is and always has been one of the most successful women-only disc golf events in the country, the Texas Women’s Championship. The WGE already has 1000+ registered women playing in 60+ events all over the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Japan.

Two months to go and we've already broken the records from 2012. We now have 630 women registered for 52 events spanning 28 states and 7 countries, and it's still growing!

Although the 600 available player’s packages have been reserved, it is not too late to participate in the event. Please visit our 2014 PDGA Women's Global Event page for information on how it works, how to sign up, how to register your event, and more. You may also contact the WGE tournament director, Karolyn O’Cull at [email protected] with any questions.

The weather forecast called for cold rain and snow flurries. As it turned out, it was sunny and a balmy 57 degrees. With a little luck from Mother Nature and an Innovation Grant from the Professional Disc Golf Association, our National Girls & Women in Sports Day dream came true.

The PDGA Women's Committee is very pleased to announce the return of the PDGA Women’s Global Event on May 10th, 2014!

Our inaugural Women's Global Event in 2012 was a huge success and made history as the largest PDGA event for a single demographic within the sport of disc golf. 41 registered tournaments, reaching across 24 states and 4 countries (including United States, Norway, Finland and Australia) resulted in a turnout of 636 women in 15 different PDGA divisions.

The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the United States, and to honor this, Prodigy Disc and the PDGA partnered up in 2013 in a fundraising effort to help fight this dreaded disease that affects the lives of so many.

In 2013, there were approximately 232,000 new cases of breast cancer and almost 40,000 deaths. The chance of a woman having breast cancer in her life is about one in eight.  Breast cancer is treatable when detected early.  The best method of detection is through self-exams. Awareness through education and promotions is the key to more women learning how and why to do self-exams.

The 5th Annual Magnolia Open is officially in the books.  With record breaking numbers in attendance at this year’s event, one can’t help but think the old saying should be changed to “5th time’s the charm.”

There were 55 ladies from 8 different states in attendance this year, including Alison Blakeman, who won a prize for traveling the farthest, coming all the way from Washington State.

With women-only disc golf tournaments popping up all over the place, Star Newton #38712, and her sister, Faith Cross #53164, are following suit in Utah. Star notes, “for years, I was the only woman in my club. I always felt like the minority, so I decided to round up all the women I saw at the course to build the female members of our club.” September 28, 2013 will be the third annual Disc Chic Challenge held in Riverpark Disc Golf Course, Riverdale, Utah.

Bradley Crow, manager of the Dynamic Discs store in Lewisville, TX is proud to present The Saucer Sisters Invitational on July 20-21 at Lewisville Lake Park. Jennifer Brooks, president of the Saucer Sisters Club, approached Bradley with the idea of hosting a women's only event and he along with his team were immediately on board.

This year marks the 7th year for Disc Girls Gone Wild presented by McSports. DGGW gets bigger and better every year thanks to the hard work of the Trip C’s Women’s Disc Golf Club, the amazing and overwhelming support of Jerry Kaapke of McSports, and the dedication of JBird Discs who has helped with the tournament efforts and the growth of women’s disc golf in the area for years.

The second and now annual Daisy Chains wrapped up on April 21st in Watsonville, CA at the beautiful Pinto Lake. After their impressive inaugural year, Christine Hernlund and the Daisy Chains staff had plenty of hype to live up to. Last year Daisy Chains world-premiere was the same weekend as the Women’s Global Event, so this year they were able to break out of the form and highlight other events within the tournament. With ancillary events like a Ladies League Competition, and a skins match, Daisy Chains is a unique tournament experience for all disc golfing women.

A popular question in the disc golf world right now is “What does it takes to run a women’s only tournament?” Who better to answer that question than Ed Coffey, Tournament Director for the Texas Women’s Championship?  The 2010 TWC, with 98 participants, held the record for most female disc golfers at one event (record based on PDGA sanctioned events) until The Chick Flick in North Plains, Oregon broke the record in 2012 with 102 participants. In addition to that record, Coffey also makes the record books with the 2011 United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship he hosted holding the largest attendance to date for a USWDGC with 86 participants.

The 2013 National Collegiate Disc Golf Championships finally came to an end this afternoon after 4 long days of competitive play at the Hippodrome Disc Golf Complex in North Augusta, SC.

After crowning the individual medalist on Saturday evening (Colleen Thompson, representing Illinois State University and Brett Wishon of Kennesaw State), the focus today was on the team competition finals.

The Disc Golf Hall of Fame was established in 1993 as a tribute to the individual legends of our sport’s past and present. As of 2016, there are now 74 inductees in the Disc Golf Hall of Fame. Of those, 10 are women.

Vanessa Chambers #2198 (Inaugural Class of 1993)

Vanessa’s excellence in disc golf elevated both the visibility of the women’s division and the standard by which it was and is judged.  At the time of induction, she had been named Woman Disc Golfer of the Year three times, had won the PDGA World Championships twice, and compiled a phenomenal record of top-place finishes.

With the rapid-growing women’s disc golf scene, the PDGA Women’s Committee is proud to cover two women’s tournaments happening the weekend of April 20-21, 2013: Texas Women’s Championship and Daisy Chains Women's Tournament. Being the two largest states in the country they also have the first and second highest numbers of female PDGA members, so it seems only right that they host the first women-only tournaments of 2013. The “TWC” is like a seasoned veteran, whereas Daisy Chains is coming back with more experience after a solid rookie year.

Each year on March 8, International Women’s Day is celebrated around the world to “mark the economic, political, and social achievements of women”. Although this holiday is not so well-known here in the United States, countries such as Russia celebrate International Women’s Day by giving flowers to the important women in their lives, much like we would celebrate Mother’s day. The International Women’s Day website created the theme The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum to celebrate 2013.
