The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum

Tuesday, February 19, 2013 - 15:12

What could be a better way to start an amazing year of women’s disc golf than with a tournament focused around a national women’s holiday? First time tournament director, Myrriah Gomez, has teamed up with Innova Champion, Legacy Discs, and Pocket Disc to present the 1st Annual International Women’s Day Tournament. The tournament will be a one day C-tier event on March 9 at Brent Baca Disc Golf Course in Albuquerque, NM. Registration will be open until the morning of the 9th unless it fills prior to the event.

Are you saying to yourself, I haven't played a disc golf event in New Mexico? According to Myrriah the city of Albuquerque has not held a sanctioned tournament in about 10 years. So, here's a great reason and the perfect opportunity to add New Mexico to your 2013 events schedule!

When asked about the event, Myrriah explains, “The IWD Tournament is not a women's only event, but it has a special significance for women. Every year on March 8, women around the world celebrate women’s achievements on International Women’s Day. Various organizations will hold events throughout the month of March to showcase women’s achievements in economic, political, and social spheres. This year’s IWD theme is “The Gender Agenda: Gaining Momentum.” As women disc golfers, we often ask our peers and ourselves how we can gain momentum…not just on our drive, but also in the sport of disc golf. This year’s theme allows me, as TD, to merge my background in Women’s Studies with my love of disc golf. It allows me to raise awareness about disc golf to an international community of women and raise awareness about IWD to a male-dominated sport.”

The highlight of this event is that “100% of the proceeds of this event will benefit a local organization called Young Women United. Young Women United (YWU) is a community-organizing project in Albuquerque, NM, with young women of color, ages 13-15. YWU organizes with its members, leaders, and activists to improve young people’s access to quality health care, build educational equality for pregnant and parenting teens, improve access to prenatal care and treatment for substance-using pregnant women, ensure that women of color and low-income women have access to all birthing options, defend reproductive rights and build reproductive justice.” Myrriah Gomez has a great passion for disc golf and women's rights. The combination of these two into one event is making a bold statement to the world.

If you are planning on making your way to the Texas State Championships after The Memorial Championship presented by Discraft, consider adding the International Women’s Day Tournament to your schedule. You can experience the beautiful and vibrant city of Albuquerque, support a great cause, and perhaps play your first course in New Mexico. Myrriah adds that “All women will get a special player’s pack if they attend. Come for the golf, stay for the hospitality!”
