European Open Cancelled, Amateur Open Held On Aug 21-23

The European Open organization has decided to cancel the European Open PDGA Major event preparations for 2020. This painful decision was made after carefully considering all circumstances.

“We are no longer looking for a later date for the event in 2020, and will push our 10th European Open event to July 2021” says Jussi Meresmaa, founder of the European Open, and continues “Arranging this magnitude event during these uncertain times became an impossible task for our staff. As much as we wanted this event to happen, we needed to prioritize everyone’s health and safety.”

European Open is truly an international major with players usually attending from 15 different countries. European Open also gathers the biggest spectator crowd in disc golf, so arranging this event in full scale would not be possible this Summer. The late-summer window was too tight to make an event where all the best players in the world could safely participate in this event.

The European Open 2020 participants have been contacted by email with instructions on how to proceed. All participants can either have their 2020 event entry fee fully refunded or use it to pre-register for the 2021 European Open, date TBA. By choosing the latter option players can already secure their spot in the 2021 event. If a participant first decides to take this option but later has to withdraw from the 2021 European Open, they are still eligible to receive a full refund.

New Date for the European Amateur Open: 21-23 August

The European Amateur Open participants can still get the European Open experience on 21-23 August 2020. This event does not house spectators, fewer international players attend it, and the Finnish authorities have allowed organizing events of this scale.

The event will be held on the new date but otherwise the event has been changed as little as possible. Naturally, there will be no European Open 2020 spots available as a price for the MA1 and FA1 division champions. But the stakes are still high in August as these players can either choose a ticket to the European Open 2021, or the equivalent value in merchandise, as their price.

The European Amateur Open 2020 participants have received instructions by email as well. All Amateur Open participants have three options:

  1. They can attend the EAO 2020 in August.*
  2. They can use the entry fee to pre-register for the 2021 European Amateur Open. (Date TBA.) By choosing this option players can already secure their spot for the 2021 event, and avoid the registration rush.*
  3. They can have their 2020 event entry fee fully refunded.

*If a participant first chooses option 1 or 2 but later has to withdraw from the 2021 European Amateor Open, they are still eligible to receive a full refund.

Please note that the event website hasn't been fully updated yet. The process is on-going but will take another day or two.
