PDGA Announces Modifications to 2021 World Championship Points and Qualifications

Monday, June 15, 2020 - 14:56

The cancellation of 2020 PDGA World Championship events has resulted in several modifications to invite and points requirement criteria for when these tournaments run in 2021. Most importantly:

  • PDGA members who received invites for any 2020 World Championships will receive a 2021 invite if they remain eligible (see below) and are a current member by Dec. 15, 2020.
  • Current members who did not earn an invite for 2020 may still earn a 2021 invite based on their 2020 PDGA tour year participation.
  • The points requirements for 2021 invites have been reduced by 30% in response to the coronavirus pandemic’s impact on the 2020 season.
    • This is a guaranteed minimum reduction to the points requirements, which may decrease further later this year. But it gives members a chance to start planning their tournament schedules to meet their points needs.
    • This reduction is subject to change for states, provinces, or countries that have not been re-opened for PDGA sanctioning as of this announcement.

These changes do not apply to the 2021 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships, for which qualification will continue to be based on player rating.

Additionally, there are age and event-specific considerations. All 2020 invites will be adjusted as needed for those aging out of an invited division.

2020 Invited Junior Players

  • 2020 Junior Worlds invitees who are age 19 in 2021 and remain classified as Amateurs will receive an MA1 or FA1 invite for the 2021 PDGA Amateur Disc Golf World Championships.
  • 2020 PDGA Junior Disc Golf World Championships invitees who turned Pro will not receive an invite. Instead, they will need to meet the 2021 Pro Worlds invite criteria based on player rating.

2020 Invited Amateur/Masters Players

  • 2020 Amateur Worlds invitees aged 19-39 in 2021 who turned Pro will not receive an invite. Instead, they will need to meet the 2021 Pro Worlds invite criteria based on player rating.
  • 2020 Amateur Worlds invitees aged 40+ who turned Pro will receive an invite for the corresponding division at the 2021 PDGA Professional Masters Disc Golf World Championships.

Please see the individual PDGA World Championships Invite Criteria documents for the specifics on how to earn an invite to each tournament.
