2024 European Open — Final Recap
This year’s edition of the PDGA Major European Open has given us some memorable moments, and the final round didn’t disappoint in terms of excitement!
Here's How to Watch Coverage of the 2024 European Open
In the FPO division things were turned on their head as Kristin Tattar came back to overcome a horrible round 3, where she not only lost the lead but also saw her chances of winning the event just about slip through her fingers with that unlikely +8 round, which meant she had 7 strokes up to Eveliina Salonen in the lead.
Furthermore, she also had to overtake Silva Saarinen, who in the battle between Tattar and Salonen had climbed to 2nd place, only three strokes back of the lead.
In the 4th and final round however, things were turned on their head. Not only did Kristin Tattar show us that world class level that she so often displays, at the same time, Eveliina Salonen suffered even more that Tattar had yesterday. She ended her tournament with a +9 round, that not only saw her concede the victory, but also the top 3 altogether. She ends in 4th in even par for the tournament.
With Salonen out of the race, the game was on between Tattar and Silva Saarinen, who started the round with birdies on the two first holes, but after that she too many bogeys and with Tattar playing the hot round of the day, not even Saarinen could keep Tattar from making a majestic comeback, giving us one of the most incredible rollercoasters in disc golf history.
In the MPO division, we also had a battle on our hands as Gannon Buhr had a three stroke lead to Paul McBeth, who has won the European Open on no less than 5 occasions.
And surely, the battle that we had anticipated came to the vast gallery that had come out to The Beast on this Championship Sunday in Nokia, but it wasn’t McBeth who proved to be Buhr’s strongest opponent. That turned out to be Ricky Wysocki who started the round four strokes back of Buhr before the round, and while Buhr had started in usual style, Wysocki locked in and gave Buhr a run for his money. With an eagle on hole 3, he was three down through 5 holes, and then he went on a 9-hole birdie streak. And with Buhr’s bogey on hole 17, the two were tied for the lead going into the final hole at the European Open.
And here on the iconic hole 18 Gannon Buhr came out on top, as he birdied while Wysocki bogeyed, meaning that Gannon Buhr is the new European Open Champion.
