Moving Day Arrives in Flagstaff

2023 PDGA Masters World Championships — Day 3 Recap

Friday, July 14, 2023 - 09:46

Cale Leiviska and the top of the MP40 engaged in an absolute shootout on Thursday at the 2023 PDGA Masters Disc Golf World Championships.

There’s a similar theme throughout a number of the 25 divisions and nearly 900-player field in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Now, the pressure has picked up all the way down the leaderboard as Moving Day has arrived in northern Arizona. Following Friday’s fourth round, the fields will be cut for Saturday’s semifinals and the race for a PDGA World Championship tightens.

Here’s a look around the action heading into Moving Day:

  • For the first time this week, MP40 has a solo leader. Leiviska (-28) and Joe Rovere (-27) went step-for-step throughout the round with Leiviska’s birdie on 14 at Little America Long being the lone difference down the stretch. Josh Anthon is two off the pace in solo third and David Feldberg rounds out the lead card at 24-under. The hot rounds on Thursday belonged to Pete Ulibarri (T5) and Tony Ferro (T15) at 12-under.

  • Ohn Scoggins is now two-for-two with hot rounds at Fort Tuthill. Her 9-under round put her back on top the leaderboard with a three-stroke lead over Holly Finley (-21), who had tied things up entering Round 3. The two have pulled away from Stephanie Vincent (-15) as action shifts to Little America Crew for Friday’s round and the semifinals. Finley had the hot round in FP40’s first trip to the Crew course on Wednesday.
  • In MP50, Chris Smith continues to hang on to his lead. It’s down to just one stroke through as Ron Convers is right behind leading a super-tight field.

  • Hank Kirwin matched the hot round on Thursday to reclaim the lead in MP55. He leads Mark Kilmer by one and Jerry Goff by three.
  • Kelly Jenkins had the hot round by two strokes to jump to a tie atop FP55. Karen Sattler has led the entire tournament and the two have a four-stroke lead.
  • In FP60, Pam Reineke took off on Thursday, breaking away from a four-way tie for first. Reineke dropped a 924-rated round for a four-stroke lead over Kathy Hardyman.
  • MA40 has a new leader in Dan Vassar (-25). Vassar and David Hurley (2) turned in rounds in the 40s on Thursday for a big shakeup in the largest amateur division.
  • FA40 hasn’t had an outright leader all week and that’s still true as Jamie Williams and Kristi Lewis have entered the mix. They both had rounds of 57 to jump to a tie for the lead with Viktoria Kossenkova.
  • MA50 also has a three-way tie heading into Friday. Billy Bauer had a share of the hot round honors, Kenji Cassady continued his solid performance this week and Eric Jubin kept his spot up top.
  • Margaret Patterson was opportunistic with the best round of the day and now leads FA50 by five strokes.
  • Nevada’s Deona Werth is the new leader in FA55 by one stroke over Angie Taylor, who has led every round until Thursday.
