Off & Running
As is custom in Leicester, Massachusetts, things are off to a wild start at the 2024 Disc Golf Pro Tour Playoff — MVP Open presented by OTB.
Both divisions have three-way ties at the top of the leaderboard after the first 18 of the four-round event, the final DGPT stop of the season with championship implications on the line, and the field is right behind them.
The three co-leaders in FPO — Missy Gannon, Raven Klein and Ella Hansen — all arrived at their 4-under finish differently. Gannon was the only player in the field that went bogey-free; Klein led in birdie percentage with eight; and Hansen only slipped up once on the infamous Hole 8 that carries one of the ponds on the beloved Maple Hill property.
Gannon led in C2 in regulation (78%) and had 316' feet of putts in Round 1, second only to Ohn Scoggins. Klein led in C1 in regulation (50%) on a day where the precipitation lingered.
Kristin Tattar will round out the lead card at 3-under, tied with Natalie Ryan. Scoggins, Erick Stinchcomb and Anniken Steen all sit at 2-under, just two strokes back of the three leaders.
It's a very similar story in MPO — but no one in the field escaped the Maple Hill Golds unscathed.
Paul McBeth carded 11 birdies — five-straight on the back nine — but also had three bogies. Ezra Robinson birdied the first five holes. Gannon Buhr went 6-under on the back nine.
They all sit at the top of the leaderboard at 8-under with Ricky Wysocki, who rounds out the lead card, and Gavin Babcock right behind at 7-under.
McBeth led in fairway hits (95%) as well as C1 and C2 in regulation while Robinson went 11-for-11 from C1X.
Defending champion Matthew Orum carded an ace to get to 5-under, a score shared by five more players.
It's off and running in Massachusetts indeed.
