Two 2x World Champion Victories
2024 DGPT - Krokhol Open — Final Recap
Krokhol proved to be a much harder challenge as the sun gave way to the sizzling rain on the last DGPT Europe event before European Open next week.
The tough conditions meant that not a single eagle was had throughout the day, but the amount of double bogeys had increased by a considerable amount however.
To prove just how much the rain affected the field, not a single player managed to take an eagle on the final day, whereas they had treated the spectators to 12 in the previous two days – nine of which were on hole 18, including Anthony Barela’s absolute park job on Moving Day.
We had a great showdown on our hands in the FPO division, and while the conditions were far from ideal no amount of rain could put a lid on the excitement that had been in the air since yesterday's round. The two contestanst vying for the trophy were 2x world champion Kristin Tattar and Silva Saarinen, who for the last 5 weeks has been picking off victories on the DGPT Europe Tour like apples off a tree.
The downpour didn’t dampen the spirits of the Norwegian crowd, who came out in numbers and an array of colourful umbrellas were seen all across the course.
The leaderboard wasn’t quite as colourful as the previous days, but the battle between Tattar and Saarinen was as exciting as we had hoped.
Having started the round neck and neck, Silva Saarinen had a two stroke lead after 4 holes, but from hole 5 and onwards, Tattar picked up 7 birdies and had a commanding lead as they went into hole 18. And even though Tattar’s drive ended up OB, she had enough of a cushion to cruise home the victory in Oslo with a bogey.
As the day went on the rain eventually held up a bit, just in time for the lead card at Krokhol Open to tee off. Jakub Semerád and Väinö Mäkelä were the two best players to have a go at Ricky Wysocki’s substantial 7-stroke lead. Väinö’s horrible start meant that he was out of the race, and while he eventually got things going to claim 3rd place, Semerád was the only one who had a fighting chance of catching up with the 2x world champion.
And what a charge the Czech made! Slowly but steadily, Semerád hacked away at Wysocki’s lead, that, by the time they came to the tee of hole 13, was now no more than three strokes, so it seemed that we were in for a great finishing run.
However, Wysocki had other plans, and with the notion that attack is the best form of defence, Ricky put the cruise ship into top speed and birdied 14, 15, 16 and 17 before heading to the last hole. And his aggressive gameplan was evident for everyone, who saw his drive on hole 18, which was driven so far down the fairway that just about everyone in the gallery started smiling in pure disbelief.
He tapped in his 33rd birdie of the event, which is even more impressive given that he is bogey free for the event! He is definitely a contender for European Open, especially as he’s already had time to practice the two courses, that the players will face next week.
