Paige Pierce attacked, golfed and responded when Winthrop showed why it’s such a challenge in every sense of the word.

Simply, she just kept fighting her way to her 15th PDGA Major championship

Pierce capped off a wire-to-wire win with both a fierce and calculated approach every step off the way at the 2020 Women’s National Championship on Saturday in Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Don’t look now, but there is a storm heading up the east coast as players charge into championship Saturday at Winthrop. With weather conditions deteriorating, and memories of a hurricane-shortened USDGC in 2016 fresh in their minds, players can be forgiven for checking the leaderboard earlier than usual with an eye towards locking-in their position.

Induction into the Disc Golf Hall of Fame is an honor reserved for only a very few of those who will ever pick up a disc. It is beyond a world record or championship title. It transcends celebrity and commercial success. It cannot be bought; it must be earned as much by character as by skill. It must be earned, most of all, through the respect of one’s peers.

There was a four-stroke swing on Hole 18 and Paige Pierce still leads the Women’s National Championship by six strokes.

Although it looked a little different than her scorcher to open action at Winthrop, Pierce still matched the hottest round of the day to build the large margin of lead.

A disc golf writer is always in danger of running out of superlatives when covering Paige Pierce. Mine are just about spent.

Back for the first time since 2000, the Women's National Championship has been marked by a true spirit of collaboration. When COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the 2020 United States Women's Disc Golf Championships, PDGA staff and hosts of the United States Disc Golf Championship came together to bring an FPO field to Rock Hill, S.C., providing the sport's elite women an opportunity to compete for a Major title this year. Add in the PDGA Women's Committee and its invaluable input in shaping the competition, and it's truly been a team effort.
