The 2014 United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship has officially come to an end and we can’t express in words how delighted we were to have been the gracious hosts of the event here at the International Disc Golf Center, as 99 women from 41 states made the journey to the IDGC to compete. After several weeks of intense preparation, we’re very proud to say that the event went off without a hitch. As an added bonus, we were blessed with the presence of Mom and Old Man Wallis all weekend, both of which came down to the IDGC all the way from Peoria, IL to run their eighth successful USWDGC.
Two rounds at the International Disc Golf Center is a long day, always. It doesn’t matter what course(s) or which layouts you choose. At the 2014 United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship today, both the “Steady” Ed Memorial DGC and the Jim Warner Memorial DGC were played by the 11-division field. Both courses feature elevation changes, water hazards, doglegs, blind tee shots, and a seemingly infinite amount of trees lining the fairways and the greens. Exhausting…sure. Luckily, the beauty and complexity they provide to the competitors makes it easy for them to forget just how tired they might be.
The 2014 United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship kicked off today with a single round at the International Disc Golf Center (IDGC). Volunteer legends Mom and Old Man Wallis are running the event with help from the PDGA staff and things went off without a hitch. Mom and Old Man successfully ran the USWDGC for seven years…in a row. They probably don’t need our help, but we offer it anyway out of respect.
It’s hard to believe that it’s already the latter half of September. The National Tour is done for the year, both the Amateur and Professional World Championships have come and gone, and with each passing day there is less and less sunlight available for us all to be outside throwing discs. But don’t let that get you down. There’s still plenty of exciting disc golf coming up this year, with one of the most anticipated events starting in less than 48 hours!
Registration is officially open for the 2014 United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship! This year the tournament will be held at the International Disc Golf Center in Appling, GA and it’s once again expected to be the biggest turnout the event has ever seen. Regardless of age, gender, or skill level, the three courses at the IDGC that the women will be taking on between September 19th and September 21st can only be described as world class and intensely difficult.
On a wet and cold Sunday morning, the women at the United States Womens Disc Golf Championships ventured out into the mist for the final round of the tournament and for some, the last round of the season. The arduous journey that is the National Tour can be tough on the body and mind, but its events like these that get marked on the calendar year after year, even though it is late in the season. There is a different feeling about this event.
As day two began at the 2013 United States Womens Disc Golf Championships, the autumn showers that are typical in the Northwest finally began, and umbrellas littered the courses in Portland, OR. The pools switched courses for today, as the Professional divisions played two rounds across the rolling hills and under the towering firs of Pier Park, and the Lady Amateurs went off in tee times, and were challenged by the length of the track at Blue Lake Regional Park for their only round of the day. The rain proved to be difficult for most, and the scores reflect the unfavorable playing conditions.
Day one of the United States Womens Disc Golf Championships started out today in grand fashion. Portland, Oregon is home to several incredible courses, so the task of narrowing them down to the two courses being used in the event was an extremely difficult task for tournament director Rebecca Duffy. The amateur field was set to tackle the short, technical, and majestic track at Pier Park, while the Pro divisions would test their merit at the lengthy Blue Lake Regional Park. These two courses are the perfect representation of Oregon disc golf and highly suitable for the ladies involved in the USWDGC. One (Pier) challenges
On September 20-22, the women of Disc Golf will travel out to Portland, Oregon to compete in the United States Womens Disc Golf Championships. Portland is currently home to the "Chick Flick," annually one of the nation's largest women-only events. Tournament Director and PDGA Board President Rebecca Duffy and her tournament team are extremely excited about hosting the best female players in disc golf. For the players, this is one of the biggest and best events of the year. A National Champion will be crowned in several different amateur and pro divisions.
The deadline for the submission of bids for 2014 & 2015 Major events is this Friday August 31, 2012.
The Professional Disc Golf Association released the Bid Guidelines for PDGA Major Events for events in the years 2014, and 2015 in April and has been receiving bids over the last few months. The PDGA has created these bid guideline packages to assist prospective communities in presenting their case for hosting one of disc golf’s showcase events and lays out the guidelines on how to prepare a bid to host a PDGA Major.

2011 US Women’s Disc Golf Championship concluded under the hot Texas sun with Valerie Jenkins claiming her second national title. Her four under par, 1,011 rated round gave her a four stroke lead over Liz Lopez going into the final nine. Jenkins’s stellar play provided the first separation among the top three Pros throughout the entire tournament. In the final nine Jenkins’s continued her dominate play leaving Sarah Stanhope and Liz Lopez to battle for second. Neither Stanhope nor Lopez backed down and it ended with the two tied for 2nd.
Round two begins today with the Pro and Advanced divisions back at Old Settlers Park (OSP).Yesterday’s heavy winds made for extremely technical rounds and game changing shots. Currently, in the Pro division Liz Lopez and Sarah Stanhope are tied for first while Val Jenkins is close on their trail at one stroke back. In the Advanced division, local favorite Nicole Cazares is already out to a strong 7 stroke lead over the rest of her field. Shelia Kirkham in the Masters division and Suzette Simons in the Grandmasters division are also pulling ahead by 5 and 6 strokes, respectively. In the Advanced Masters division, it is still a close race with Stacey Whitley ahead of second by only 3 strokes.
The 2011 United States Women’s Disc Golf Championship (USWDGC) is being held in Round Rock, Texas, September 16th-18th. As their 20th year approaches, the Old Double R Disc Golf Club will taking over as the host of this annual event for 2011. This club has also hosted the Texas Woman’s Championship (TWC) since 2005, holding the record for attendance in woman‘s events. These dedicated advocates of Woman’s disc golf have aided in almost tripling the participation of woman disc golfers. This coupled with their enduring efforts to encourage and sustain the advancement of this sport make it an honor for all involved.
On September 24-26 the women of Disc Golf will travel down to Jacksonville, North Carolina to compete in the 12th Annual United States Women’s Disc Golf Championships. For the Women, this is where the National Tour will make its final stop. A National Champion will be crowned in several different amateur and pro divisions. In the Open field, Sarah Stanhope is fresh off her World Championship, and hopes to defend her USWDGC title that she won last year in Quad Cities, Iowa. But, the competition will be fierce with former National and World Champions such as Elaine King, Des Reading, and Valarie Jenkins, and a field of other World Class disc golfers seeking a PDGA Major title, Sarah will have her work cut out for her.
