With the third round now officially in the books, the 2015 Memorial Championships presented by Discraft has officially come to an end for many. Those that didn’t make the cut in the professional divisions threw their last drives and tossed in their last putts today, and the same goes for all 300 of the competitors in the advanced divisions. Most of them will be sticking around for the remainder of the weekend, either to watch the final rounds of the pros, or simply to spend a few extra hours in the sunshine and warmth of an Arizona winter, or both.

Open

The professional divisions have now been virtually cut in half, leaving only the elite players remaining for one last battle at Fountain Hills tomorrow. The Senior Grandmasters will take the tee first tomorrow morning, starting at 7:00am. They’ll be followed by Grandmasters, Masters, Open Women, and Open, respectively. The last tee time of the day is 12:26pm featuring the lead card players in the Open division: Simon Lizotte #8332, Jeremy Koling #33705, Paul McBeth #27523, and Dave Feldberg #12626.

Lizotte has been playing the consistent mind-blowing disc golf up to this point and it’s no surprise to see him at the top of the lead card going into the final round. His first round at Fountain Hills left him tied for third place with Koling at 13 under par. His second round at Vista Del Camino wasn’t his best work, despite it being unofficially rated at 1024, but it was still strong enough to keep him on the chase card. And last but absolutely not least, there was his round at Fiesta Lakes today.

Those that know the game well knew that someone would shoot an absurdly low round at Fiesta Lakes this afternoon. That someone happened to be Simon Lizotte, and to say he played well would be an embarrassing understatement. It's quite ironic that the current world record distance champion was the one to dominate the relatively short track. Lizotte finished the round at an astonishing 15 under par, bogey free, unofficially rated at 1109.

The next best round in Open was 11 under par, and it was shot by three different competitors: Anthony Barela #44382, Kyle Eckman #47892, and Matt Dollar #26045. Eckman and Dollar are seasoned veterans of the game, so to see them shoot 1071 rated rounds is not all that surprising. Barela’s performance however, considering he is just 14 YEARS OLD, is extremely impressive. He won The Memorial Championship last year as an amateur and now, a year later, he’s starting the final round on the third card with some of the best disc golfers in the world at his side.

Open Women

The Open Women’s lead card has varied over the last few days, in third and fourth place anyway. First and second place…not so much. Val Jenkins #17495 was in the lead after the first round and has remained there since. Paige Pierce #29190, last year’s winner in Open Women, has also remained in the same position since day one, battling with Jenkins for the lead. Pierce’s hot round of eight under par this morning, unofficially rated at 1042, leaves her just one stroke off the lead going into the final round at Fountain Hills tomorrow.

To put Pierce’s round of 48 this morning in perspective, only 12 of the 179 competitors in the Open division turned in a better score, five of which only beat her by one. The women teed off early this morning and didn’t have to face as much wind as the Open division players, but we’d be willing to bet that many of the Open players would prefer slightly more wind versus less wind but an 8am tee time.

Jenkins and Pierce will be joined by Jennifer Allen #15354 and Jessica Weese #50656. Weese is tied with Liz Carr #31068, but because she shot a better round today at Fiesta Lakes, she earned a spot on the top card. The four cards that made the cut in the Open Women’s division are scheduled to start teeing off tomorrow at 8:50am, with the lead card going off at 9:14am.

Amateur Divisions

Nearly 300 players made the trek to Arizona this week. They played the same courses as the professional divisions, and for the most part played the same layouts as well. Many of those that are taking home the title of champion did so by a very narrow margin. Congratulations to all of the champions listed below, and to everyone else that spent three long and exhausting days in Phoenix duking it out against the competition.
