Day 3 - Sunday

FPO

British Rachel Turton has finally established herself – if there was any doubt about it - among the top elite FPO European players after convincingly winning the Konopiste Open presented by Discmania, second stop of the 2023 PDGA Euro Tour in the beautiful Czech woods.

Starting with a four-stroke advantage, hole 3 quickly brought extra emotion to the round as Rachel scored an unexpected double bogey and saw the difference reduce by half, but she delivered a clean central part of the course with four birdies – including some highlights as her great 150m drive on hole 9 – and brought the distance to five to comfortably take the win.

Sofie Björlycke (Sweden) showed that experience pays off to recover from a weak second round and kept a couple of birdies for the final rush to tie for the second place.

Three Estonians completed the top five: Kaidi Allsalu suffered a bad plus-1 first round that hindered her to have clear winning chances, but she was able to hold to tied second place with 5-under even after getting eight consecutive pars in the last holes.

Krist Unt kept her fourth position with a solid round, but this time it was Anneli Tõugjas-Männiste who was not able to reach her level and fell from the lead in the opening round to a final fifth position.

Sunday afternoon came with the expectation of great occasions: local idol Jakub Semerád was cheered by hundreds of people who gathered on the slopes of the Konopiste castle to experience the final round of the leader card up close.

The theoretically favorite Niklas Anttila started with two shots ahead, but yesterday's incredible demonstration by Paul McBeth and an unexpected OB from the Finn on hole 1 made more than one suspect that the American was going to rule the final with an iron hand.

Nothing could be further from the truth! The six-time World Champion had not quite found his game, and a modest 1-under at the end of Front 9 left him with no aspirations for victory.

Jakub Semerád continued to draw crowds and delivered an excellent card of 7-under that allowed him to reach third position, which was within his objectives as he told us in the warm-up area.

The one who did not give anyone a chance to approach him was Niklas Anttila who, after the scare on the first hole, birdied 13 of the following 17, achieving victory in an overwhelming way.

His compatriot Daniel Davidsson told us in the interview that he understood halfway through the round that it was going to be impossible to catch Niklas, so he focused on maintaining second place by keeping a close eye on his rivals and finishing the tournament in a very regular way.

And while the crowd got excited about the leading card action, quietly and quietly, a 15-year-old from Sweden, Hjalmar Fredriksson, turned in a 10-under card and moved up to third place tied with Semerád — indeed it was second for a while — with an impressive and very mature game.
