DGPT - Open at Austin — Final Recap

Sunday, March 17, 2024 - 22:59

History was made Sunday in Austin, Texas.

Ohn Scoggins capped off one of the most dominant tournament showings in PDGA history to start things off and an emotional roar from Niklas Anttila ended another thrilling stop on the Disc Golf Pro Tour at the Open at Austin presented by Flight Factory.

Starting the day with a two-stroke lead after a blistering round on Saturday, Scoggins — the three-time and current PDGA Masters World Champion —  kept the pedal down with a 10-under, 1042-rated finale and an 11-stroke win.

With a tournament average of a 1029, it is projected to be the highest FPO event rating of all-time, according to StatMando. The previous record was a 1024 average, set by Paige Pierce on two different occasions, the 2020 Jonesboro Open and the 2021 USWDGC.

Anttila’s burst of emotion came after a much more dramatic finish, but after clutch shot after clutch shot, it was the Nordic Phenom who now owns the title as the first MPO player from Finland to win on the Elite Series.

FPO

It was all Ohn.

On top of her usual spot near the top of the putting statistics, Scoggins put on an absolute clinic off the tee all three days at Harvey Penick Golf Course.

For the weekend, Scoggins hit seven putts from Circle 2 — three in Sunday’s victory lap — but led in strokes gained tee-to-green at 22.29, two full strokes over the closest competitor. Scoggins also led in fairway hits (87%), parked (24%) and C2 in regulation (78%).

Scoggins left no doubt, going 6-under through the front nine on Sunday and, as she humbly put it, it was just her week. She finished with a 26-under total.

Kristin Tattar had the second-hottest round on Sunday with a bogey-free 8-under par to jump three spots into solo second place (-15). Tattar averaged 1000 on the weekend.

Missy Gannon rounded out the podium in solo third place with a 10-under total for the weekend.

MPO

Anttila came to the United States for the first time in 2022 with one goal on his mind: Win on the DGPT and as the sun set in Austin, it was the 23-year-old Finn roaring.

Faced with do-or-die putts on the final two holes, Anttila connected from 46 feet on 17 to tie things up and, with his goal in his sites from 35 feet away, he delivered and let out a burst of emotion previously unseen.

Waiting and prepping for a potential warmup was Kyle Klein, who fired off a 12-under, final-round blitz in the 15-holes final round for MPO. Three holes were removed for the entire division due to a weather delay earlier in the day.

Anttila would not be denied as Klein made the surge from the third card, up seven spots to his solo second finish. The two teammates finished 1-2 in strokes gained tee-to-green with Klein leading at 16.60 — nearly four strokes ahead of Anttila.

Also in the mix down the stretch was Calvin Heimburg, who fired off a 10-under final round and was in contention until a bogey on the 18th. Cole Redalen (T6) joined Heimburg at 10-under for the second-hottest round of the day.

But it was history for Anttila when the dust settled on another thrilling ending on the DGPT.
