After battling through a difficult course through deteriorating conditions, Ryan Mulder held onto his lead and was crowned new USADGC Champion.

Mulder started the tournament off hot, scoring 10-under in the opening round and keeping his momentum by shooting six-under on moving day. Going into the final round, Mulder had a five-stroke lead over second place but the wind and rain threatened to put an end to his hot streak.

“It was a little tough at the beginning because I knew that a five-stroke lead was pretty safe, but it was not a hundred percent safe on this course in these conditions,” Mulder said of the rough weather in Round 3, “About 11 holes in, I had I think a seven-stroke lead and that’s when things started to calm down.”

Mulder scored one-under in the final round, finishing the tournament at 17 strokes under par and extending his lead to seven strokes. With his seven-stroke victory over Tanner Boggs, Mulder is now tied with Scott Burnett for the second-largest margin of victory in USADGC history. David Wiggins Jr. still holds the record with his 10-stroke victory in 2010.

Throughout the weekend, Mulder displayed a masterclass in controlled aggression. As well as scoring 16 total birdies and the only eagle of the tournament, he picked up only one bogey when he took a five on Hole 17 in the final round.

When asked about his controlled gameplay, Mulder said, “I think that eliminating the bogeys is very helpful on any course and I think that you need to pick your spots to be aggressive throughout any course you play.”

Mulder has proven himself capable of powerful shots but still played placement golf on the long holes of the Toboggan course. On Holes 3 and 7, Mulder was able to get great distance off the tee without cutting off the angle for his upshots, leading to his only two birdies of the day. Even with Sunday’s difficult conditions, Mulder wasn’t losing strokes to the field since he rarely put himself in position to bogey.

Going into Round 3, Mulder held a 1042 event rating, the highest ever in USADGC history at the time. Mulder ended the event with a total 1024 rating, putting him just behind Robert Burridge (1029) and Kyle Klein (1039) for highest event rating in USADGC history.

With his second place finish, Tanner Boggs improved on his 2022 USADGC finish by 34 places. Waden Sides and Danny Moynihan finished right behind Boggs, tied for 3rd place at nine strokes under par. Sides shot the hot round at six-under and jumped up six places to snag a podium finish. This is the largest podium finish jump since 2014 when Jason Sosnowski shot 9-under on the final day to jump from 25th to 2nd place.

Now with a USADGC title, Mulder sets his sights on the next Amateur Major.

“I think this is my first win of the year,” Mulder said after being crowned the 2023 USADGC Champion, “It’s amazing to be able to do it at this stage and I’m hoping to take down the next one at Am Worlds.”
