New Chapter at IDGC
Infestation forces major changes in Appling
An unexpected and unfortunate event will alter the next chapter of one of disc golf’s most beloved properties.
Due to an infestation of the southern pine beetle, the International Disc Golf Center (IDGC) will undergo significant clearing of the pine trees on the property, resulting in a new future for disc golf in Appling, Georgia.
The southern pine beetle is one of the most destructive threats to the pine tree, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture. Prompt suppression is key for management of the outbreak to prevent further tree loss and cut-and-remove is the most effective treatment with an efficacy rate of 97%, according to the USDA.
A total of 129 acres in Wildwood Park will be impacted, including 29 acres of the IDGC property. Specifically, a large portion of both the W.R. Jackson and Jim Warner Memorial Courses will be lost.
The project was ordered by the Army Corps of Engineers, who manages the land in Wildwood Park, to begin immediately due to potential safety and liability concerns. Columbia County Parks selected the date based on scheduled activities and safety concerns.

The next steps are to work with acclaimed course designers to develop at least two championship-level courses and a shorter, beginner-friendly track.
Regarding the PDGA Champions Cup in 2024, the third edition of this PDGA Major event will require an adjustment to its schedule. While the event is still scheduled for April 25-28, 2024, The Champions Cup is moving to Northwood Park in Morton, Illinois. The change is to ensure that there is ample time for design, development, and testing of a new layout, including input from key stakeholders, and beautification efforts to guarantee that the standard set for PDGA Majors is met for the 2025 PDGA Champions Cup and beyond.
Though it is a significant blow to a historical and beloved piece of property, the next chapter in the life of the IDGC will ensure it remains a destination for all disc golfers, and a source of pride for PDGA members.
