Reading Pulls Away, Schultz/Feldberg Tied for Lead at 2017 US Masters

Sunday, September 10, 2017 - 11:36

With all divisions now having three rounds in the books, the 300+ competitors have only the final round to go here in Des Moines for the 2017 Tim Selinske US Masters Championships. With perfect weather in the forecast once again, it should be a beautiful and exciting afternoon as we head towards the crowning of 11 new PDGA Major champions.

After a lights-out opening round on Friday, 5X US Masters Champion Barry Schultz looked to be on pace for his sixth US Masters title. However, during the first of two rounds that were played yesterday, Dave Feldberg made his move, carding a ridiculous 15 under par (41) at Grandview to put himself two ahead of Barry as they headed into round 3 at Ewing Park.

Schultz battled back at Ewing, finishing the day with a bogey-free nine under par (50) to tie it up with Feldberg at the top of the leaderboard for the final round. It was the players beneath them however that were putting on a show. George Smith and Joe Rovere combined for 21 birdies and zero bogeys at Ewing Park on Saturday afternoon, turning in scores of 11 under (48) and 10 under (49), respectively.

With only the final round remaining, right back at Ewing Park, George trails Barry and Dave by two and has only a one-stroke advantage on Joe Rovere.

After two rounds on Friday, Des Reading began her third round as the leader of the Masters Women division, seven ahead of Cory Hill, and three more ahead of third place contender Melinda Ring. Playing Pickard from the long tees made for a long round at Pickard on Saturday. Giving Des the opportunity to extend her lead going into the fourth and final round.

Des played a clean and smart round at Pickard, picking up one birdie on the front, and three bogeys on the back to finish at two over par (65). Cory Hill was keeping the pace with Des throughout most of the round. Unfortunately for Cory, a few minor mistakes on the last four holes allowed for Des to widen the lead significantly, meaning Des begins the final round at Ewing on Sunday with a lead of 12 strokes. Des and Cory will once again be joined by Melinda Ring, playing in a threesome, which will be filmed by Central Coast Disc Golf.

The race for Grandmasters and several other divisions here in Des Moines is on pace for a nail-biting finish.
