Schultz Narrowly Leads After US Masters Opening Day

Saturday, September 9, 2017 - 10:37

Day one of the 2017 Tim Selinske US Masters came to an end late in the afternoon on Friday with the 300+ professional and amateur competitors finishing either one or two rounds in and around the greater Des Moines area. With two days left of competition in a city known for having difficult courses, there’s still plenty of twists and turns to come.

Barry Schultz emerged as the leader of the Masters division after their opening round at Pickard Park finishing at 12 under par (51) that included a run of seven birdies to end the day. Sitting in a tie for second place just one shy of Barry are Dave Feldberg and George Smith, both of which went bogey-free with 11 birdies to finish at 52.

Joining them on the lead card on Saturday morning is none other than Des Moine’s own Jason Duden, who is sitting tied for the 4th place spot with Joe Rovere, but earns the lead card position by PDGA number. Jason’s round of 10 down (53) included the best front nine of the entire field, where a par on hole 1 was followed by eight birdies in a row.

The Masters Women were one of three divisions yesterday that played both a morning and afternoon round, and that’s all that was needed for Des Reading to position herself comfortably ahead of the rest of the field. Des finished one over par at Ewing Park during her morning round and followed it up with a round of one under par at Grandview Park to finish at even par on the day, seven ahead of second place contender Cory Hill.

It was the round at Ewing Park that made all the difference for Des, as Cory Hill was able to match her score at Grandview in the afternoon with Melinda Ring finishing one stroke behind. Des, Cory, and Melinda will have the last tee time of the day at Pickard Park on Saturday, playing as a threesome at 2:00pm CDT.

The Grandmasters battle is just as heated as any other with Duane Steiner and Jim Oates tied at the top of the leaderboard after two rounds on Friday. Their end of day scores of 15 under par doesn't give them much breathing room, as they’ll be joined on the lead card by Brad Hammock at 13 under and Ron Convers at 12 under. They too will be teeing off at Pickard Park on Saturday just a few cards behind the Masters Women at 1:20pm CDT.

The Masters division, as well as the Advanced Masters division, have now been shuffled as we head into Saturday’s action. Follow pdgalive.com for scores, updates, pics, and videos under clear skies in beautiful Des Moines, Iowa for the 2017 Tim Selinske US Masters Championships!
