The course is primed. The field is stacked. The pressure is amplified.

It’s time to crown a PDGA Major champion.

For the first time since 2019, elite professional disc golf returns to the revered W.R. Jackson course at the International Disc Golf Center for the inaugural PDGA Champions Cup presented by Bushnell.

The four-round event debuts Thursday and runs through Sunday, giving the elite field the opportunity to secure their legacy on the course as a Major champion in the spring.

Players from around the globe, from California’s Paul McBeth to Norway’s Anniken Steen, earned invitations to the inaugural, limited event through their play on the course in 2021.

Those invitees included the winners of the five PDGA National Tour events, 11 Disc Golf Pro Tour stops, Pro Worlds, USDGC, USWDGC, the MP40 and FP40 Masters World Champions, MA1 and FA1 Amateur World Champions and select high-level international competitions.

There are 100 players in the MPO field and 40 in FPO, including Paige Pierce, who is aiming for her 17th PDGA Major, which would break a tie with Valerie Jenkins-Doss for most all-time in FPO.

“I think it’s going to be the tightest battle that we may see on tour,” Estonia’s Albert Tamm said. “As we have Worlds coming later this year, I think this will be a glimpse of what the biggest showdown of the season will be.”

The praise has rolled in for W.R. Jackson, the elite-level track of the three courses at the IDGC, the headquarters of the PDGA. The course (Par 68, 10,485 feet for MPO; Par 68, 9,299 feet for FPO) demands precision and power and provides a true mental test of how to recover from when things go wrong.

“You’ve got to know your limits,” said Gregg Barsby, who co-owns the W.R. Jackson course record of 57 with McBeth and Isaac Robinson. “You’ve got to know your discs and the way they finish. There are a lot of landing zone and placement shots out here.

“You’ve got to come back to yourself and play your strengths.”

Those strengths will be tested time and time again, both against their fellow competitors and the woods of the IDGC.

It’s spring in Appling, Georgia and it’s time to crown a PDGA Major champion.
