Local pediatrician and World Champion, Dr. Rick Voakes, will be the title sponsor of the Southern Kentucky Disc Golf Championships scheduled for May 21-22, 2011. Dr. Voakes, with the support of the Southern Kentucky Disc Golf Club, will host the two day event that has attracted top level professional disc golfers from around the world to Bowling Green for over twenty years. After a one year hiatus, the SOKY Championships returns as one of the premier A Tier events on the PDGA tour.

The event will utilize courses at Kereiakes, Lover’s Lane and Ephraim White Parks in Warren County along with Holler in the Hills. Holler in the Hills is a beautiful private course located 20 miles outside of Bowling Green in Brownsville, KY. It features holes along a river, open holes, wooded holes and lots of elevation. Check out hollerinthehills.com to see photos of the course.

Wanting to expand the field, amateur divisions will be added to this year’s event and participants in the advanced division have the opportunity to qualify for this year’s United States Disc Golf Championships in Rock Hill, SC.

The “Amazing Dr. Rick” has played competitive disc golf for nearly 30 years and, along with his wife Sylvia, is a member of the PDGA’s Disc Golf Hall of Fame. Voakes holds many World Championships, beginning in 1988 when he was the Master’s World Championship title and since then he has won the World Championship as a Grandmaster and Senior Grandmaster.  Instrumental in the development of Disc Golf in the Bowling Green area Voakes has played in tournaments all over the country as well as traveling to Japan for the Japan Open.

Writing for the current issue of Disc Golfer Magazine, Voakes credits his profession and special interest in health and wellness as main contributors to his continued success in the sport. In the article, Voakes emphasizes diet, training regime, and developing playing strategies as his keys to success in the sport.

The Southern Kentucky Championships will feature four rounds for all players.  Also included is free lunch at Holler in the Hills. The Amateur player packs include four discs, a mini, and a tournament shirt. The trophies are handmade quilts by Juliana Korver.
