This is my favorite course to play. It is as gorgeous as it is challenging. The course layout is fantastic as well. Watch out for the poison ivy though! And I recommend having spotters for your throws, especially in seasons of high brush. And take a camera :)
Stafford is simply one of the best courses in California. It's burly big with numerous holes over 400 feet when the baskets are in long. There are now 5 new holes in the woods that provide tight and narrow routes, which adds to the variety of the course and makes it 23 holes long. The best part about Stafford is that the land is dedicated to disc golf. So there are no baby carriages, picnickers or dog walkers to worry about - it's all about disc golf.
If you're a wimp and want a short walk on flat terrain with no weeds, no poison oak, no snakes, no deer or no turkeys, you will not like Stafford.
I played on top of Haleakala crater on Maui in June. That course isn`t on any website or directory and was incredible and local as hell> Novato was my favorite experience in my disc golf career so far even after playing a course as challenging and indiginous as Hawaii>>>!

It's been a really long time since I played this course.. When I went there were only dirt tee pads.. This place is a monster!!!! Huge holes & major elevation changes.. I need to go back and see what I can score now a days.. But it is also one of the most beautiful courses I have ever been on!!! If you want to be challenged to the utmost try this course out!
I played this course this past weekend (10/16/10) for the second time. The first time was about 8 or 9 years ago. I flew out from Oklahoma to visit a friend and play some disc golf. The thought of playing this course was in my head constantly for 2 weeks leading up to the trip and it did not dissapoint. In fact, it was even better than I remembered.
It is a burly course that is a great workout to play and the scenery is unbeatable. It tests every part of your game and demands significant power. This is simply a must play for any disc golfer. The $10 fee (on weekends) is for entry into the park for one vehicle, not per person and it is worth every penny.
After playing this course again, I am going to have to go back and revise some of my other ratings because what I thought was a 5 has been re-written.
The first time I played Stafford Lake was a cathartic experience. I'm incredibly competitive and I keep score whether I'm playing with someone else or not. The first time I played this course I played alone and after the first 3 or 4 holes I completely forgot about keeping track of my score because of the sheer beauty of the place. The wildlife was abundant and I felt as if I'd entered into their realm. Aside from a few small buildings in the distance here and there (and a (ball) golf course next door) there was little sign of human interference upon this beautiful enclave. Deer, gigantic jackrabbits, assorted waterfowl..on one hole I had to throw from under a huge and very active hornet's nest. There were these hawks flying around the whole time. On another hole that was in an open field I took my drive and as my disc sailed toward the basket one of them swooped down about 10 feet over my head and followed my disc along it's flight path as if to show me that he could do that too! It was AMAZING!!! After I played, I drove back to SF and picked up a friend and went back & played a 2nd round! My 3rd & most recent round was over a year later and it wasn't quite as fulfilling. There'd been a wildfire and it was summer instead of spring. Nevertheless, I think about this course and my virgin experience of it all the time. If you find yourself within 100 miles of this place, go to it!! Oh, and the course itself is badass, too!
I think that this course is one of the best tournament courses in all of california. The long and technical holes will challenge your game to the brink of frustration, don't make me get started on all the elevation changes, upward of 100 ft differance on some of the long tee's. This course is magnificent and will make anyone a better player. Hole 1 is 492 feet uphill in its long position with over a 40ft climb in elevation, one of the hardest starting holes out there.
pros: big armed course. this course is well spread uot with great in placements and use of land. the course from basket to following tee is decently easy to find. park maps and score cards are available. also there are some technical shots and all cement tee pads.
cons: the parking lot is a good walk from the first tee.

The preponderance of big arm holes and crazy elevation define this course. Also the great views of the surrounding hills, oaks and lake. Too 'hardcore' for most. The long and uphill holes are great but there's just too many of them. I think the design misses opportunities to mix in more shorter and technical holes uses more gnarly oak branching, although there are a few. The long walk to hole 1 and back to the parking lot after getting beat up from the hike, plus the parking fee makes this course only an occasional 'treat'.
